Starts blooming in its second to third year after planting. It normally climbs by aerial roots, but needs a little support until established. Flowers best in full sun, in sheltered and warm locations; may freeze during severe winters. Excellent when trained over an arbour or a pergola and is particularly useful for covering walls and strong supports.

Calystegia hederacea Multiplex

A climbing perennial with very interesting flowers: double ball-like vivid pink flowers. Blossoms form July to September. Arrow-like downy leaves. In spring, old woody stems should be cut back just at the base of the plant. Best grown in a warm sunny position. Thrives best in moist well drained and rich in humus soil. Excellent for small fences, trellises and other garden supports.

Fallopia aubertii - silver lace vine

The most rampant climber of our climate with densely twining stems up to 12m long (6m of annual growth). Small, green, ovate-lanceolate leaves fall off after frost. From August to October tiny white flowers are borne abundantly on short branchlets. Though tolerant of poor soils, it will grow much quicker in a fertile ground. Prefers sunny sites. It may freeze during severe winters. Due to its vigorous growth it's excellent for covering unsightly buildings and tall fences, but will grow equally well over arbors, pergolas and various supports of a strong construction. Quickly creates the desired effect and should be pruned back if becomes excessively expansive. Well suited for cultivation on a balcony.

Menispermum davuricum - Dahurian Moonseed

An interesting climber with attractive foliage that turns yellow in autumn. Large (10-20 cm across), heart-shaped, deep green leaves have 3-7 barely discernible lobes. Slender twining shoots densely entangle a support covering it with tiling leaves. Suitable for growing over arbours, fences, pergolas, trellises and other supports, it appreciates a site in full sun. Perfect as a screening or a ground cover plant. Prune when needed. When the plant has excessively spread out, every 3-4 years it can be cut off at 20-40cm above the ground. Spreading stolons should be kept under control.
