Lonicera periclymenum Graham Thomas - woodbine honeysuckle

A popular climber with ornamental flowers: tubular, fragrant, purple-red outside and creamy within, borne in clusters from June to September. Attractive, bright red fruits (Jyly - October). Reaches a height of 4-6m with 1-2m of annual growth. It doesn't have any special soil requirements. In May it's often subject to attack by aphides, especially when grown in dry and sunny positions. An excellent all-purpose climber, well suited for scrambling over arbors, pergolas and other supports.

A striking, very strong-growing ivy variety of exceptionally large green and yellow leaves but moderate frost hardiness. The leaves are 15-20 cm long, varying from ovate to cordate, non-lobed, irregularly dentate, evergreen, leathery, lustrous, green with yellow veins and irregular, blurred splash of yellow and light green in the middle. It clings to supports by means of aerial roots, climbing over walls. It reaches 7 m height, gaining 1- 2 m a year. This variety can freeze during harsher winters. It should be placed in sheltered locations, in a mild climate e.g. West and North-West of Poland. It thrives in semi-shade, tolerates average soil and temporary draughts. Particularly useful as groundcover but it can also be trained over walls or tree trunks.

An interesting climber with attractive foliage that turns yellow in autumn. Large (10-20 cm across), heart-shaped, deep green leaves have 3-7 barely discernible lobes. Slender twining shoots densely entangle a support covering it with tiling leaves. Suitable for growing over arbours, fences, pergolas, trellises and other supports, it appreciates a site in full sun. Perfect as a screening or a ground cover plant. Prune when needed. When the plant has excessively spread out, every 3-4 years it can be cut off at 20-40cm above the ground. Spreading stolons should be kept under control.
