Description

A valuable climber grown not only for its ornamental and medicinal properties but also for consumption. Fruits, leaves and bark contain schisandrine (tonifying and strengthening substance), vitamin E and are rich in microelements. Flowers small, creamy-white during May and June. Scarlet, round berries, borne in grape-like clusters, ripen from August to September. It starts bearing fruit in the fourth-sixth year after planting. A hardy, high-climbing species reaching 3-10m (1m of annual growth). Requires moist but not damp, fertile soils. Particularly useful for growing over fences and buildings, but it can also be left scrambling over arbors, pergolas and various supports.

A Ukrainian, autogamous variety abundant in fruit. Its valuable stems are used for decorative, medicinal and nutritional purposes. The fruit, but also to some extent the leaves and the bark contain schisandrine (toning and strengthening substance), Vitamin E and many minerals: iron, copper, manganese, nickel, molybdenum, titanium and zinc, as well as significant quantities of magnesium, potassium and phosphorus.

Nutritional and decorative plant used for centuries in the traditional Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Tibetan medicine. Its main attraction are orange-red fruits, commonly known as Goji berries. ‘No.1’ cultivar’s fruit are bigger (2,5 cm) and sweeter than the species fruit.

Considered the best cultivar for commercial cultivation (Berry Kiwi, Mini Kiwi). Oval fruits, about 3 cm long and 2,5 cm across, with a brown red bloom when exposed to sunlight ,ripen in early October. They are very tasty and have an edible skin. It starts bearing fruit in the 3rd-4th year after planting. Sustains frosts up to –28oC. It requires a warm sheltered site and moist but well drained, fertile soil. In order to set fruit a male plant of the same species (e.g. male form ‘Weiki’) is needed in the vicinity. Actinidia climb by twining. It’s suitable for growing over various supports, arbours, pergolas and trellises or may be trained on wires stretched across poles. Particularly useful for house gardens, garden plots and production plantations.
