Atragene Group

A very valuable Swedish cultivar, raised as a hybrid of Clematis faurieri and Clematis sibirica. Charming double flowers of the shape of an open bell, 6-8 cm across, slightly nodding. White sepals with pale yellow stamens. Main and the most profuse flowering in April-May on old wood, but it continues blooming throughout the summer on new shoots. From June to autumn the plant is additionally adorned with light silky seedheads. No pruning required. Tolerates moderate soils and partial shade but good drainage is necessary. A healthy and quite undemanding climber. 
Ideal for fences, over rocks and old trunks, or for growing through shrubs and conifers. Makes good ground cover.

An aptly named cultivar with delicate pale pink semi-double flowers and light yellow stamens bearing a close resemblance to a ballet dancer' skirt. Blooms profusely on old wood in early spring, but some flowers continue to appear throughout the summer. In summer and autumn decorative seedheads develop. Very hardy and undemanding. Ideal for growing over fences, walls, rocks and old trunks. It can clamber through small trees and deciduous or coniferous shrubs and is particularly suitable for planting at the base of vigorous vines that tend to develop flowers in the upper parts of a plant (e.g. Wisteria, Celastrus or Clematis montana). Makes good ground cover, suitable for container growing.

A Polish variety raised by Szczepan Marczyński, introduced in the market in summer 2012. Flowers are exceptionally large for the Atragene Group, light lemon-yellow and during budding – lime coloured. In full bloom the colour whitens. Bell-shaped, nodding, set on purple pedicles. They have 4 lanceolate, slightly wavy and pointy sepals. Stamens are composed of yellow anthers on lime-coloured filaments and pistils are light-yellow. Flowers borne in May and once more - although less abundantly - in summer. It has pretty, dark green and relatively large leaves (20 cm long and 18 cm wide) which are compound – trifoliate, with leaflets of attractive texture and serrated edges. It reaches 2-3 m height. Attaches itself to the support by means of twining leaf petioles. Frost hardy and undemanding. Prefers sunny but not hot sites and tolerates semi-shade. Particularly suitable for training along fences, garden supports, rocks, old tree stumps or over deciduous or coniferous shrubs. Useful as a groundcover.

First Clematis variety with golden-yellow leaves. Handsome contrasting violet-blue, bell-shaped, wide-opening flowers, 5 – 6 cm across, are composed of 4 – 8 lanceolate tepals. It blooms in late April and May and repeats flowering in summer but the crop is scarce. From June to autumn fancy fluffy seed heads adorn the plant. It grows 2-3 m high and clings to its support by twining leaf stalks. Very frost hardy and undemanding. It tolerates partial shade but the variegation is more prominent in full sun.
