A remarkably striking variety of hardy hibiscus (perennial). It grows up to 120 cm in height and width, forming compact clumps, and branches out very well. Its foliage and stems are highly decorative—very dark, brownish-burgundy—and take on an almost black hue when grown in sunny locations. They provide a stunning contrast to the massive, deep red flowers (up to 25 cm in diameter) that appear in mid-summer. The plant attracts pollinators and butterflies. This hibiscus is undoubtedly a showstopper that commands attention and looks particularly good near garden ponds. It is frost-hardy and requires fertile, humus-rich, moist yet well-drained soil. It prefers sunny, wind-sheltered spots. As a perennial, it requires the removal of all stems every spring. Covering the plant with bark, compost, or evergreen boughs for the winter helps accelerate the development of the above-ground growth in the spring.
