A perennial hibiscus of striking, exotic beauty. It grows to a height of approximately 100 cm, forming compact, impressive clumps. The plant produces large, maple-like leaves on stiff stems; these leaves are dark in color—sometimes appearing almost black—and offer a highly decorative, intriguing contrast to the flowers that bloom in July and August. During this period, the plant makes a stunning impression, as its gigantic flowers (20 cm in diameter) appear. They are light pink with a purple center, composed of five large, spirally arranged petals featuring distinct darker streaks. The plant attracts pollinators and butterflies. This hibiscus is undoubtedly worthy of a prominent spot in the garden; it is impossible to overlook. It looks particularly good near garden ponds. It is a frost-hardy perennial that requires fertile, humus-rich, moist yet well-drained soil. It prefers a sunny location sheltered from the wind. As a perennial, it requires the removal of all stems each spring. Covering the plant with bark, compost, or evergreen boughs for the winter helps accelerate the development of the above-ground growth in the spring.
