'Annabelle' is the best known variety of Hydrangea arborescens. It is spectacular flowering shrub with rounded habit. Reaches a height of about 1-1.5 metres. The leaves are large, light green, almost heart-shaped, hairy underneath with serrated edges. Creamy-white flowers, gathered in a large about 15-20 cm, hemispherical inflorescences appear on the plant in June-August. Sweetly scented flowers attract butterflies. It prefers sheltered, sunny or partial shade positions. Grows best in moist, humus-rich soil. The name derived from two Greek words: hydor (meaning water) and angos (meaning a vase), alluding to the shape of the seed capsule.
