Compact Guelder Rose is a rounded, dense shrub with palmate, prominently veined leaves. Flat clusters of white flowers appear in May and followed by bright red fruits which persist into winter. The berries may be used to prepared juices, jellies and preserves. They are rich in vitamin C, vitamin P, organic acids and polyphenols, which lower blood pressure, prevent the formation of free radicals and calming asthma. To get rid of bitterness should be cooked in boiling water for 2-3 minutes or freeze. Grows best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Fully hardy. Variety recommended for any type of garden. Ideal for shrub border. At the end of the growing season plants have beautiful purple-red leaves. The fruit is a delicacy for bullfinches. In 2002 viburnum opulus 'compactum' received AGM award granted by the British Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) for varieties particularly valuable.
