Description

A vigorous climber (but a slower grower than Vitis coignetiae) with stunning, large (15-25 cm), 3-5 lobed leaves that turn crimson in autumn. Attains a height of 6-8 m with up to 2 m of annual growth. It has small soil requirements and is frost hardy. Native to Far East (China, Japan, Korea, Syberia). Suitable for growing up tall fences, arbours, and sturdy supports, everywhere where there is too little room for Vitis coignetiae.
Pruning: when it disturbs neighbouring plants. It’s best pruned in late autumn or winter (before the start of the growing season), or in summer, after the new wood has become partially woody. Otherwise it will bleed sap.

A vigorous climber. Semi-evergreen leaves are composed of 5 leathery, deep green leaflets mottled with white. Pale pink, fragrant flowers open in May. A good pollinator for other cultivars of the species. It has very interesting, sausage-shaped fruit with edible flesh. The stems twine round the supports. The variegation is more pronounced in full sun. Suitable for training up fences and various supports. It can also be left to climb up the trees. Ideal for growing over arbours, pergolas or gates.

Lonicera x tellmanniana - Tellmann honeysuckle

A superb species with rich golden-orange flowers, borne in clusters in June and July, followed by orange fruits. Reaches a height of 5-6m with 1-2m of annual growth. Requires fresh fertile soil and a sheltered site. In May it's often subject to attack by aphides, especially when grown in dry and sunny positions. Well suited for scrambling over arbors, pergolas and other supports.

Parthenocissus tricuspidata Veitchii - Boston ivy, small-leaved Virginia creeper

A strong-growing, self-clinging vine adhering itself to supports by means of adhesive pads at the ends of leaf tendrils. Tall-growing, it reaches a height of 10-20m (1-2m of annual growth). Healthy and undemanding species, but may freeze during sever winters. Leaves dark green, turning brilliant scarlet in autumn, the variegation being more dramatic in a sunny position. Excellent on buildings, but is also suitable for growing over arbors, pergolas and various supports.
